This week the dice have landed is in spring of our senior year in high school and way up in the very rare air of the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. We end up discussing Moulin Rouge and wonder whether there’s something inherent to pop music or pop-art more broadly that makes it more likely to be self-referential, or have an ironic, meta-aware frame. Why? Probably because of the one tasty cocktail below. Listen!
What we’re drinking tonight, while we melancholically plumb our long-gone youths for things we loved and things we hated:
Bourbon Grapefruit Sidecar, CIB Edition
2 oz bourbon
2 oz freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
1/2 oz Cointreau
1 barspoon semi-rich simple syrup
Fill a cocktail shaker with all that up there and some ice. Shake vigorously. Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass or serve up in a chilled coupe glass. You don’t need to garnish with anything—garnishes are unnecessary, that’s why they’re called garnishes. Enjoy.
